There goes the neighbourhood

It’s not often you can get to say ‘There goes the neighbourhood’ and for it to be literally true!

Today Lambeth, Stockwell Partnership and the Oval Partnership were at the Oval Farmers Market undertaking consultation on the Neigbourhood Enhancement Programme. This was one of the models of the local neighbourhood being taken carried by the Community Development officer for the Stockwell Partnership.

Iron man and Oval Farmers Market

Iron man passes Oval Farmers Market

Iron man passes Oval Farmers Market

You can make your own headlines for this picture. Here’s my interpretation

There he was. Iron man himself passing by the Oval Farmers’ Market at lunchtime. I am impressed by any man that is so dedicated to sartorial elegance that he brings his own ironing board with him – it made for a nice flat back on the backpack on his back. I would have stopped him to get the real story but I was …pressed for time (:-)

Oval Farmers’ Market most local food producer?

01 Oct

Naomi at Birdy Yum Yum stall

Naomi at Birdy Yum Yum stall

Naomi who runs the Birdy Yum Yum stall, is probably the most local food producer to the Oval Farmers’ Market. So local in fact that you could throw a jar of her delicious chutney and reach Offley road where the food is produced.

Perhaps it was fate that someone should be producing chutney in that particular road. Offley Works, dating from 1899, was a purpose built factory for Sharwoods -yes the famous brand that is still around today. It was from Offley Works that chutney was first mass produced in ths country Thank you to Sharwoods for introducing this particular food to the country and to Naomi for continuing the tradition!

Coffee catastrophe averted

Now there’s dedication for you.  Cafe Bancarella had a problem with their coffee machine this morning.  Tea drinkers were ok but coffee drinking local residents were strewn all over the green gasping for a drink.  Luckily the stall holder popped home and picked up another coffee machine and saved the day. Phew.  That was a close one (:-)

Wisteria fans

Now there’s an idea.  Chris  from City and Country Farmers Markets (they manage the Oval Farmers Market) and Jo from Grove Farm (a regular stall at the market) are both fans of wisterias.   The one here in Claylands road has just finished its second flowering of the year.  The suggestion is that we should take some cuttings of this one and distribute them at the market.  What a nice thought.  The neighbourhood would be a lot better with more wisterias.

Oops. I was up too early this morning (swimming at Tooting Bec Lido at 7:15-with 20 other brave souls!).  I forgot that the market starts at 10:00 so couldn’t get one of  Julie’s crepes so settled on some vegetarian options from the Honest Carrot stall (good name).

It was nice to see some new faces at the market and I don’t mean the 1970s/80s TV talent show. The market seems so much better with stalls on both sides of the path.

Wet day at the Oval Farmers’ Market

Going to Oval Farmers' Market on wet day

Going to Oval Farmers' Market on wet day

Not the best bit of planning as I managed to get caught in pouring rain on the way to the Oval Farmers’ Market.  The rain can’t be good for business but there were still pelnty of people there and the rain rarely lasts that long.

Next time I’ll check out the local weather forecast.

Local residents issue challenge

Local residents pose some challenges

Local residents pose some challenges

Feeling a bit brave at the Oval Farmers’ Market today (11 June)  I thought I’d ask these local residents what ideas they had to improve the local neighbourhood. They came up with:

(1) Reroute traffic around the Oval
(2) Catch a local burglar
(3) Reinstate park wardens/improve safety in local parks
(4) Move/put in a new bus stop along Kennington

Hmm. Nothing too easy to start then-  I’ll do some research and see how I get on.
