It’s not often you can get to say ‘There goes the neighbourhood’ and for it to be literally true!

Today Lambeth, Stockwell Partnership and the Oval Partnership were at the Oval Farmers Market undertaking consultation on the Neigbourhood Enhancement Programme. This was one of the models of the local neighbourhood being taken carried by the Community Development officer for the Stockwell Partnership.

Vauxhall and Oval Safe for Cyclists!

Cyclists prepare for tour of danger spots

I never thought I would ever say that the Vauxhall gyratory was safe for cyclists but, for a brief moment today, it was.

Hundreds of cyclists (and one roller blader) met at St Marks Church and headed off on a tour of the ten most dangerous cycling spots in London. Two of the ten are in the Oval Ward:

1. Clapham, Kennington Park and Camberwell New Roads (near to St Marks Curch/Oval tube station
2. Albert Embankment, Kennington Lane and Wandsworth Road (Vauxhall Cross gyratory system)

I was very impressed by the organisation of this event. There was no police escort nor was there any need for one. The marshalls did a superb job managing to close off road junctions just ahead of the main pelaton so that we could all pass through safely. Mind you, although I felt safe while with the group the return journey was as dangerous as ever.

Do you remember Kelly’s? The pub at the corner of Clapham and Dorest Roads. It has now been transformed into Mar Azul-The Blue Sea Restaurant

It’s a Portuguese restaurant specialising in sea food. If the service and food quality is always as excellent as last night, I suspect this will become one of the area’s best loved restaurants.

The owners have done an excellent job on the interior. I liked the changing light colours(wouldn’t mind some of them at home) and being able to see the food being prepared in the kitchen.  I also liked the fish tank or should I say…lobster and crab tank!

The restaurant has only been open three weeks and I’m sure it is going to be a great success.  There is live entertainment most evenings so its well worth checking out.  My wife will probably be booking her works Christmas meal there so…enough said.

Years ago there used to be bonfires on Claylands Green on Guy Fawkes night. Eventually things got out of hand and a mulberry tree burned down. Now the bonfires are a distant memory but last night there was an informal firework display on Claylands Green attended by some local residents. Why not stick to back gardens you may ask? One of the fireworks sold by Sainsburys required spectators to stand 25 metres away. If anyones got a garden that big let us know and we can arrange a fireworks party there next year (:-) Surely Lambeth can organise something that local people can go to.

PS The firweworks were much better than my night time photography could cope with…
