This picture may not win any wildlife picture awards but I’ve been trying for a while now to get a picture of a local greater spotted wood pecker. They are usually hidden high in the tree canopy -you can hear but not see them. As the leaves have now fallen, there are fewer hiding places. I managed to get this shot as the woodpecker was perched on the oldest tress on Claylands green.
Have had a little break from the commmunity blog as I’ve been studying…still am in fact.
I’ve also been hoping that switching the comments facility on the blog off for two months will discourage those who try to promote their businesses with time wasting e-mails. These can be far more invasive than junk mail and companies which adopt such business practices are, in my view, unethical. The sad thing is that some of those businesses won’t realise that internet marketing companies are doing this on their behalf. There are better ways to promote your business on the internet than this.
If you are a regular user of the Oval Station you will have noticed the ‘thought for the day’ at the top of the escalators. When you get to the bottom of the escalator you are probably like the 75% of people in this picture and go through the ‘No Entry’ sign to the Northern Line. If I may offer a suggestion for a future thought for the day.
The right way is the right way
You can’t argue with that
People with businesses who don’t know any better, pay companies to try and boost their position in website rankings. Little do they know that those companies annoy lots of people. I try to waste as little energy as possible on spurious postings but do make a note of the companies they are advertising and make sure that I never but anything from them. Ever.
The Claylands Green Action Day has a good turnout on Saturday (3rd December 2011). Over the course of the day, more than 20 people turned out to help carry out those small taks that never seem to get done. Local residents, councillors and a team from Lambeth were painting the rails, signs and bench, planting a few bulbs, installing three new planters etc. The most important thing though, was an excuse for local people to get together and enjoy their local green. A particular thanks to those involved in organising this. There are probably a few locations around the neighbourhood that could benefit from this type of community spirit so let’s have more of these events please. Here are some photos from the day.

It’s not often you can get to say ‘There goes the neighbourhood’ and for it to be literally true!
Today Lambeth, Stockwell Partnership and the Oval Partnership were at the Oval Farmers Market undertaking consultation on the Neigbourhood Enhancement Programme. This was one of the models of the local neighbourhood being taken carried by the Community Development officer for the Stockwell Partnership.
I never thought I would ever say that the Vauxhall gyratory was safe for cyclists but, for a brief moment today, it was.
Hundreds of cyclists (and one roller blader) met at St Marks Church and headed off on a tour of the ten most dangerous cycling spots in London. Two of the ten are in the Oval Ward:
1. Clapham, Kennington Park and Camberwell New Roads (near to St Marks Curch/Oval tube station
2. Albert Embankment, Kennington Lane and Wandsworth Road (Vauxhall Cross gyratory system)
I was very impressed by the organisation of this event. There was no police escort nor was there any need for one. The marshalls did a superb job managing to close off road junctions just ahead of the main pelaton so that we could all pass through safely. Mind you, although I felt safe while with the group the return journey was as dangerous as ever.
Do you remember Kelly’s? The pub at the corner of Clapham and Dorest Roads. It has now been transformed into Mar Azul-The Blue Sea Restaurant
It’s a Portuguese restaurant specialising in sea food. If the service and food quality is always as excellent as last night, I suspect this will become one of the area’s best loved restaurants.
The owners have done an excellent job on the interior. I liked the changing light colours(wouldn’t mind some of them at home) and being able to see the food being prepared in the kitchen. I also liked the fish tank or should I say…lobster and crab tank!
The restaurant has only been open three weeks and I’m sure it is going to be a great success. There is live entertainment most evenings so its well worth checking out. My wife will probably be booking her works Christmas meal there so…enough said.
